In Spain, Heineken demonstrated its commitment to the country’s circular economy by reusing the byproducts of its brewing processes to fertilise fields and feed cattle. In 2021, the brewer integrated 178,500 tons of products derived from brewing into other industries, such as using alcohol extracted from Heineken 0.0 to produce hand sanitiser during the pandemic. Heineken’s efforts in the country also included recycling 1,000 tons of steel and 500 tons of plastic into outdoor furniture for the hotel trade, and treating 100% of its brewing water for re-use in other areas. The group’s Spanish unit is aiming to certify all its factories as 100% zero-waste in 2022.
