PepsiCo is launching Nitro Pepsi, a nitrogen-infused version of its flagship CSD, in the US.

The extension, announced this week, contains a widget that will infuse bubbles with nitrogen and create a cola with a creamier texture, according to the brand owner. Similar nitrogen widgets have been used by Diageo‘s Guinness brand, but this marks the first time they have been used for a cola.

Nitro Pepsi will be available in two variants, draft and vanilla draft. Pepsi is advising consumers that Nitro Pepsi is best served chilled and hand-poured into a tall glass.

“While soda has been a beverage of choice for so many consumers over the past century, some people still cite heavy carbonation as a barrier to enjoying an ice-cold cola,” said Pepsi’s VP of marketing, Todd Kaplan. “With this in mind, we wanted to come up with a new way for people to enjoy delicious Pepsi cola, but with a new experience around the bubbles. Much like how nitrogen has transformed the beer and coffee categories, we believe Nitro Pepsi is a huge leap forward for the cola category and will redefine cola for years to come.”

Earlier this week, The Boston Beer Co lifted the curtain on an alcoholic extension of PepsiCo’s Mtn Dew CSD brand. Hard Mtn Dew, which is produced under licence by Boston Beer debuted in three US states in four different flavours.
