Taiwan opens eyes to global reality

The geographical size of Taiwan belies its political and economic importance on the global scene. Just as in China, its entry into the WTO has had some startling repercussions for domestic and international beverage companies. Glen Smith reports

JAPAN: Sapporo to close two breweries

Japanese brewer, Sapporo Breweries Ltd, has announced that it is to rationalise its production operations, reducing its total number of breweries from eight to six. The company said it was aiming to raise operating efficiency at a time of low demand for beer. It said the reorganisation would reduce its production costs by Y5 billion a year.

MEXICO: Jugos del Valle pulls out of Kraft deal

Jugos del Valle, Mexico's largest fruit juice producer, has said it has withdrawn from negotiations with US food group, Kraft Foods Inc., regarding the latter's proposed takeover of the company, after they failed to agree on price. The announcement precipitated a 40% fall in the juice company's shares.

VENEZUELA: Coca-Cola introduces sports drink brand

The Coca-Cola Company is aiming to win a share of the growing Venezuelan market for sports drinks with the national launch of its Powerade brand. Coca-Cola hopes to have Powerade on sale throughout Venezuela by the end of September and to establish double-digit market penetration in the short term. Powerade will be made in Venezuela by the Panamco bottling company.

NEW ZEALAND: Industry combines to form new body

A new industry wide organisation, New Zealand Winegrowers, has been formed to represent the interests of 600 grapegrowers and nearly 400 winemakers. The Wine Institute and Grapegrowers Council have transferred most of their activities to the new body. Its governing board consists of seven winery and five grower representatives.

ASIA: Carlsberg Asia announces new management structure

Carlsberg Asia, the 50/50 joint venture between Carlsberg Breweries A/S and the Chang Beverages Limited, is to change its top management team when the present CEO Michael C. Iuul reaches retirement age in January 2003. The new management, which will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the company, will include a chief investment officer, two chief operations officers (COO), and a chief administrative officer.

KOREA: Edrington targets South Korea with Hite deal

The Scotch whisky producer Edrington, best known for The Famous Grouse and The Macallan, has signed a major agreement to supply a new range of Scotch whisky to South Korea, the world's largest market for deluxe Scotch. The long-term partnership with Hite Group, South Korea's leading alcoholic beverage distribution company, is designed to capture a major share of a market, which has tripled in size to 37m bottles in the last 12 years.

AUSTRALIA: Boom time may herald new round of acquisitions

Boom level profits for Australian major wine producers are expected to lead to more international acquisitions this year. The corporate reporting season for the wine industry majors ends this week, when BRL Hardy is expected to unveil a strong first half profit on the way to a forecast $A80m ($US44m), for the calendar year.

NEW ZEALAND: Lion Nathan acquires Wither Hills

Australian beer and wine group, Lion Nathan, has acquired the New Zealand wine company, Wither Hills, in the Wairau Valley, for NZ$52m, subject to approval from the Overseas Investment Commission.

COMMENT: Diageo choosing buy-backs over buy-ins

Diageo is to use the proceeds from the Burger King sale for a share buy-back. By ridding itself of its hamburger business, Diageo has completed its restructuring and is now exclusively an alcoholic drinks company. Using the proceeds from the sale to buy back shares rather than for acquisitions makes sense, as other opportunities already exist within the company.

NZ: Villa Maria expands winemaking team

New Zealand winery Villa Maria has announced the appointment of Corey Ryan as senior winemaker, based at the estate's Auckland winery.  Corey joins Villa Maria from Australian winery C A Henschke & Co in the Barossa Valley where he had spent the last six years working as winemaker. Before this he worked vintages in France for Chapoutier in the Rhône Valley and in various co-operative operations throughout the Languedoc and Roussillon winemaking regions.

THE NETHERLANDS: Merrill Lynch upgrades Heineken

Investment bank, Merrill Lynch, has upgraded its intermediate-term rating on the Dutch brewing group, Heineken, from "neutral" to "buy" and has set a 12-month price target of €48. The bank has a long-term "buy" rating on Heineken.

KENYA: EABL pre-tax profits up 36%

Higher net sales and lower costs helped the Kenyan brewer, East African Breweries Ltd (EABL), to post a 36% rise in full-year pre-tax profits of KS3.4 billion (Kenyan shillings) ($43.1m), up from KS2.5 billion last year.

INDIA: Supreme Court acts to assess environmental damage

The Indian Supreme Court has appointed a panel to assess the environmental damage caused to rock faces along the Manali-Rohtang road, a 55-kilometre stretch of a major Himalyan pass in the Himachal Pradesh region, by Coca-Cola and Pepsi advertising. It also reiterated that firm action would be taken against the soft drinks companies and other firms which had placed advertising on the rocks.

UK: FSA extends Interbrew case deadline

The City watchdog, the Financial Services Authority (FSA), has extended the deadline it set for four news groups implicated in the Interbrew leak case to hand over the leaked bid documents.

AUSTRALIA: ABARE warning over EU non-tariff barriers

The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) has spoken out against barriers to Australian wine exports into the EU. In a report on the world wine market, ABARE warned that more non-tariff barriers to Australian wines are being seen in the EU which could impede further growth.

THAILAND: Suntory sets up Thai sales company

Japanese beer and spirits group, Suntory, has set up a dedicated sales company in Bangkok in a bid to develop its business in the growing Thai spirits market. The new company is owned 49%-owned by Suntory, with three local financing companies owning 17% each.
