US wine importer Banfi Vintners has added Alexander Valley Vineyards to its roster.
The deal makes Alexander Valley Vineyards the first Californian brand in Banfi Vintners’ portfolio.
The family-owned winery, based in Sonoma’s Alexander Valley, is a “widely distributed national brand with a significant presence in all channels”, a Banfi spokesperson said.
“There is still tremendous opportunity for expansion,” the spokesperson said. “In the competitive climate that we find our industry in today, geographic distribution alone is not enough. Brands need a sizeable, dedicated sales team to amplify their authenticity, tell their story and deliver experiences in the market – that’s where Banfi delivers the most value. It makes all the sense to pool resources for the benefit of the greater portfolio and our customers.”
Alexander Valley Vineyards operates through a network of distributors “with alignments that vary by market”, the spokesperson added. “There is no intention to change that in the near future.”
Founded in 1975 by Hank and Linda Wetzel, Alexander Valley Vineyards produces wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Zinfandel.
In a statement, Banfi’s third-generation family proprietor and CEO Cristina Mariani-May said: “With an average price point of $25-plus, the wines from Alexander Valley Vineyards align with Banfi’s ethos of affordable luxury and sustainability first mentality and beautifully complement our current portfolio.”
Banfi’s portfolio includes Pacific Rim & Company, which produces wines from Washington and Oregon.
The company also holds an ownership stake in Natura wines, an organic brand from Chile’s Emiliana Organic Vineyards.
Alexander Valley Vineyards director of sales Robert Wetzel said: “At a time when we are celebrating 50 years of Alexander Valley Vineyards, partnering with Banfi sets the tone for the next 50 years.”
Earlier this year, Banfi struck a deal to represent US whiskey business Brother’s Bond, its first deal in the Bourbon category.
