The Coca-Cola Co will reports its second-quarter and half-year results tomorrow (19 July). Here, just-drinks takes a look at the highs and lows for the company in the three months to 2 July.
- The soft drinks giant kicked off the quarter with the launch of its fully recyclable ‘PlantBottle’ across its Dasani and Odwalla beverages in the US. The bottle, made from a blend of petroleum-based materials and up to 30% plant-based materials, originally launched as a pilot in May 2009 with Dasani in nine countries.
- In the same month, Coca-Cola announced the investment of around US$40m in a major upgrade of its operations in Hanoi, Vietnam over the next year. Having invested $3m in a new water line for its Dasani brand in Danang last October, te company said it hopes to add a high-speed PET plastic line and a hot-fill line to its Hanoi facility.
- In May, Coca-Cola dropped its trademark-infringement lawsuit against PepsiCo over the packaging of the latter’s Trop50 juice brand. The company had filed the lawsuit against its rival in October claiming that the packaging for PepsiCo’s Trop50 fruit juice line would “likely deceive consumers and dilute the quality” of its own Simply brand of juices.
- May also marked a milestone for Coca-Cola with its 125th anniversary celebrations. Events took place globally to mark the milestone, including public consumer events, the launch of a Karl Lagerfield-designed Diet Coke bottle range, bespoke beverage packs, television adverts and street sampling.
- In June, Coca-Cola confirmed the closure of one of its distribution and sales centres in the US. The facility, located in Richmond, Eastern Indiana, ceased operations at the end of the month, resulting in 40 job losses.
- In the same month, Coca-Cola confirmed to just-drinks that it will increase soft drink prices in the US in the second half of the year. The company plans to raise prices 3% to 4%, for a total increase of 2% to 3% for the full year.
