Asahi Group has released an alcoholic tomato juice.
The 4%-abv chu-hai, or spirits-based RTD, contains 21% juice from Kagome, a Japanese manufacturer of tomato-based foods. According to Asahi, the RTD has a balance of “acidity and sweetness”.
The new product is the second in Asahi’s Premium series under the Luxury Shibori alcoholic fruit juice brand. Luxury Shibori means luxury squeezed.
The first in the series, a mandarin orange flavour, was released on 14 September.
Japan’s beverage brand owners are well-known for their innovative launches. Last month, Sapporo unveiled a curry beverage in a coffee-style can. “It’s perfect when you feel like curry,” the company said.
In the same month, Kirin Holdings announced a 9%-abv RTD that contains three of the five basic flavour categories. Kirin The Strong Special Dry Sour has a citrusy sour taste from cooked fruit, a salty component from sun-dried salt and an umami flavour from aged rice.
