Bacardi has added a third expression to its Aberfeldy single malt brand’s French red wine cask-finished portfolio.

Aberfeldy 18-Year-Old French Red Wine Cask, which will be available in an unspecified number of units, spent time in barrels that formerly held red wine grown in the Côte Rôtie region of France’s Rhône valley. According to the brand owner, the 40-mile long stretch of land is responsible for just 4-5% of wines grown in the region.

Bacardi confirmed plans to also roll out the expression to selected off-premise outlets in Austria, China, France, Germany, Malaysia, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan and the US in the coming months.

“This style of wine has got … fruity notes, but also floral notes and so it’s just a match made in heaven for Aberfeldy,” said malt master Stephanie Macleod. “These wine casks don’t come around very often, so when we were offered them we snapped them up immediately.”

Bacardi launched the range in 2019 with a 15-year-old expression aged in barrels formerly used to hold red wine from Bordeaux’s Pomerol region, followed by an 18-year-old aged in ex-Pauillac casks.
