Suntory Holdings has released a new ultra-aged expression from its Yamazaki whisky brand.
Yamazaki 55 is a blend of an unspecified number of single malts that was distilled in 1960, before maturing in white oak casks between 1964 and 2020. After an initial release in Japan last year, the company today said that “extremely limited” quantities of the iteration will be available to purchase from specialist retailers in a handful of global markets, including the UK, US, Mainland China and Taiwan.
The group added that US$5,000 from the sale of each in this year’s 100-bottle collection will be donated to The White Oak Initiative, an organisation committed to the long-term sustainability of white oak forests in the US.
Yamazaki 55 is presented in a crystal bottle engraved with the brand name and housed in a box made from native Japanese Mizunara wood.
In 2017, Suntory released a whisky that had been aged in casks made out of the highly permeable Mizunara wood.
