Pernod Ricard has secured a minority stake in two Mexican corn-based spirits.
The company today confirmed its investment in corn whisky Abasolo and corn liqueur Nixta Licor de Elote, both of which are owned by Casa Lumbre Group. The move follows Pernod’s investment last year in another Casa Lumbre brand, the Ojo de Tigre mezcal.
Pernod today told Just Drinks the partnership comprises an unspecified minority investment in Abasolo and Nixta Licor de Elote. A spokesperson declined to provide further details of the terms of the arrangement but confirmed that as with Ojo Del Tigre, the investment is in the brands and not in Casa Lumbre, which remains independent.
Abasolo is made from corn and aged outdoors at Destilería y Bodega Abasolo, Mexico’s first dedicated whisky distillery. Both the whisky and the liqueur brands were founded last year.
“We believe in Abasolo’s ability to build the world whisky category by recognising more varied tastes,” said Michael Merolli, CEO of Pernod’s ‘House of Tequila’ division. “With its distinctive flavour profile, ancient process and Mexican provenance, Abasolo offers something unique that I’m delighted to bring to new consumers.”
Also today, Pernod announced a strong jump in three-month sales that saw the group outpace pre-pandemic levels.
