Pernod Ricard’s Irish Distillers unit has added a further expression to its Method and Madness Irish whiskey portfolio.
Mulberry Wood, announced today, is a single pot-distilled whiskey that has been finished in 50-litre white mulberry casks – a world first, according to the company. The limited-edition whiskey was first aged in a combination of first-fill and re-fill American Oak barrels.
This month’s addition follows the 2019 releases of wild cherry wood and acacia wood expressions from Method and Madness, which debuted in 2017.
“With its unusual wood structure and small cask size, there’s no doubt that mulberry wood presented its challenges, with early trials failing,” said Irish Distillers’ maturation research & innovation technologist, Anna Lazaridou. “But, our … dedication to trial and error has produced a beautifully-balanced whiskey”.
Earlier this month, speculation from 2014 resurfaced that Pernod could be lining up a move for Australian wine company Treasury Wine Estates.
