Plezi Nutrition, a company co-founded by Michelle Obama, has launched Plezi Hydration, a sports drink developed with NBA star Stephen Curry.
Marketed as a “healthier” alternative to existing options, the beverage is available in three flavours: Lemon Lime, Tropical Punch and Orange Mango Twist.
Priced at $2.29 per 16.9oz bottle, Plezi Hydration is sold in California at retailers including Walmart and Albertsons. The drinks are also available through Amazon.
The launch is part of Plezi Nutrition’s ongoing partnership with Curry and his wife, Ayesha Curry, who invested in the company last year.
The company said the Currys contribute their “expertise and passion for health and wellness” to Plezi’s product development and marketing.
Obama launched Plezi Nutrition in 2023 with “a mission to create higher standards for how the U.S. makes and markets food and beverages for kids”.
The company’s new drinks will compete with the likes of PepsiCo’s Gatorade and Coca-Cola’s Powerade BodyArmor.
However, Curry believes Plezi Hydration can “make a real difference” by offering “smart ingredients and unbeatable flavour” to help consumers fuel their bodies “the right way”.
Curry added: “No nonsense, no shortcuts – because the next generation deserves better.”
According to Plezi Nutrition, the new drinks contain no added sugar or artificial sweeteners, has less sodium than leading rivals, and provides a “full daily dose” of vitamin C.
In a statement, Obama said Plezi Hydration was “created with the help and expertise of registered dietitians” and “we are excited to provide a delicious, healthier option for everyone who’s trying to get active and stay hydrated”.
The drinks are the third range from Plezi Nutrition.
The company made its debut with Plezi, a kids’ drink, followed by Plezi Fizz, a carbonated fruit drink aimed at tweens and teens, which was launched last March.
