Shipments of Rioja wine rose more than 4% in 2024, helped by increased exports to the UK and the US.

Figures from the Spanish wine region’s control board showed export volumes to four of the five largest markets increased in 2024.

More than 98.8m litres of Rioja was sold outside Spain last year, an increase of 4.4%, data from the Consejo Regulador DOCa Rioja showed.

Exports to the UK, the largest market for Rioja outside Spain, grew 12% in volume terms to just under 32.4m litres.

In the US, volume sales increased 17% to 10.4m litres.

Sales to the Netherlands and Canada – the fourth- and fifth-biggest export markets for Rioja – also rose.

However, exports volumes shipped to Germany, the third-largest market for Rioja, dropped 5% to 11.7m litres.

The Consejo Regulador DOCa Rioja said it does not provide data on the value of export sales.

When including the volume of Rioja sold in Spain, sales inched up 0.6% to 240.1m litres, or more than 328m bottles.

Sales of Rioja fell 1.9% in volume terms in Spain in 2024 to 141.2m litres.

The Consejo Regulador DOCa Rioja said the region accounted for 26.8% of the sales volume of wine sold in Spain, compared to 27.1% in 2023.

Those sales represented 30.4% in value terms, it added.
