By GlobalDataThe limited-edition Distiller’s Select Tequila Finish uses extra añejo barrels for the final stage of the maturation process. The initial liquid is Sagamore’s flagship Straight Rye Whiskey.
According to Sagamore, the mix of Tequila and rye “gives fans of both spirits something unexpected, seasonal and full of flavour”.
Tequila Finish is part of the Sagamore Spirit Reserve Series, a collection of limited-edition, Maryland-style rye whiskies aged in barrels that formerly held other spirits, wines or beers. Past releases include Manhattan Finish, Rye Ale Finish and Calvados Finish.
Tequila-ageing has become popular in Scotch whisky since the rules on which barrels can be used were relaxed. Meanwhile, Tequila has proved resilient in the US during the coronavirus pandemic. Group sales for Jose Cuervo owner Cuervo jumped by more than a third in the US last year. In Diageo’s first-half results released in January, US sales of Don Julio Tequila increased by 55%. Sales for Casamigos leapt by 137% in the country.
Sagamore Spirit is part of Plank’s privately-owned Plank Industries.
