The UK-based Paramount Retail Group has acquired Yorkshire’s craft beer producer Saltaire Brewery, its first acquisition in the drinks sector.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Paramount Retail Group said in a statement that it “foresees” a growing demand for “authentic” British products in the UK and worldwide.

Based near Shipley, West Yorkshire, Saltaire Brewery’s product range – such as its Saltaire Blonde and Meet The Brief beer brands – is currently sold in UK retailers including Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Tesco, Booths and Mark’s and Spencer’s.

The brewery has an annual capacity of 30,000 hectoliters. Saltaire Brewery also undertakes contract brewing and packaging.

Its management team will remain in their positions following the acquisition, Paramount Retail Group told Just Drinks.

“With the increasing global demand for UK-made products, particularly in the USA and Asia, we see tremendous growth potential,” Paramount Retail Group director Sunny Sharma said in the statement.

“This acquisition enables us to introduce the best of British brewing to a broader audience, underscoring our commitment to quality and innovation.

“We are excited about the opportunities this acquisition presents and are confident it will significantly contribute to our growth strategy to pursue further acquisitions of prominent brands, strengthening our market presence.”

Also based in Yorkshire, in Sheffield, Paramount Retail Group owns several pet businesses and the sweets producer Great British Confectionary Group – a merger of Bristow’s of Devon and Crawford and Tilley, purchased in 2017 and 2018. In 2023, the group also snapped up Montezuma Chocolate for an undisclosed sum.

Paramount Retail Group chairperson Paul Taylor said: “Acquiring Saltaire Brewery is a strategic step to enrich our portfolio with another esteemed UK heritage brand. We are committed to preserving Saltaire Brewery’s unique identity while using our resources to expand its market reach.

“By incorporating Saltaire Brewery into our extensive distribution network, we expect to achieve significant operational efficiencies and enhanced market reach.”

Saltaire adds to the growing list of independent UK craft brewers being snapped up by larger firms. Last year, UK private-equity firm Keystone Brewing Group, purchased four breweries in the UK market, all of which had entered or were about to enter administration.

In March, Asahi Group Holdings shuttered its Meantime brewery in London as the Japanese giant looked to consolidate its production in the UK.
