Beam Suntory has made changes to the bottle used for its flagship Sipsmith gin variant.

The spirits major said the new bottle for Sipsmith London Dry gin uses “up to” 44% recycled content and weighs 20% less than the original vessel.

In another change, Beam Suntory will no longer use a “wax-dipped” lid with the bottle. That move would save seven tonnes of plastic a year, the company said.

“This beautiful new bottle design shows that it is possible to reduce environmental impact significantly without compromising the quality of the packaging,” Sipsmith co-founder Sam Golsworthy said.

Just Drinks has asked Beam Suntory for details on when the new bottle would hit the market and to ask if the company has any plans to make similar changes on other Sipsmith products.

Beam Suntory acquired a “controlling interest” in UK-based gin and vodka producer Sipsmith in 2016. Galsworthy set up Sipsmith alongside co-founder Fairfax Hall in 2009.

Earlier this year, Beam Suntory announced new packaging for Scotch whisky brand Laphroaig, with beechwood replacing a plastic component and a more recyclable carton introduced.

The company said the move will deliver a reduction of approximately 1,184 tons of greenhouse gases annually.

Overall, Beam Suntory is aiming to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and use 100% recyclable packaging by 2030. It also has a target to reduce its water usage by 50% per unit produced by the same year.
