Bronco Wine Co., the US family-owned business behind the Charles Shaw brand, has appointed Dominic Engels as its new CEO.

Engels took on the CEO role on 11 November to succeed Daniel Leonard, who is retiring after 38 years with Bronco Wine.

Commenting on the appointment, Bronco Wine board chairman Michael Franzia said: “The wine industry is undergoing a massive shift right now, and as a company we need to continue to innovate across all facets of our business.

“The addition of Dom will help ensure we can meet consumers on their wine journey, be a leader in sustainability and continue delivering the highest quality wines for every occasion.”

Engels, who previously led Revolution Foods and Stone Brewing as CEO, brings more than three decades of experience in developing “purpose-driven, omnichannel consumer brands and to drive commercial and operational transformations”, the company said.

His tenure at Stone Brewing saw him overseeing “quality-centric production” and distribution of alcoholic beverages in both domestic and international markets.

Engels said: “With over 50 years of pioneering innovation in the wine industry, Bronco has established a legacy that is both inspiring and impactful.

“The company's strategic investments in cutting-edge, vertically integrated infrastructure and its dedicated, high-performing team, have positioned it uniquely to build on its heritage.”

Founded in 1973, Bronco Wine claims to have achieved full vertical integration from vine to table and claims to be one of the “largest privately held” vineyard owners in the US.

Some 17,000 acres of the company's vineyards are certified by the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing programme and an additional 2,000 acres are certified organic.

Bronco Wine portfolio caters to a range of price points and includes brands such as Rosenblum Cellars, Carmenet, and Charles Shaw, also known as Two Buck Chuck.

In July, Bronco Wine expanded its reach through a distribution agreement with Republic National Distributing Company, boosting the availability of its wines in 20 US states.

Additionally, the company introduced the 2021 Panther Rock Napa Valley Meritage to the market in May. The wine combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with a hint of Petit Verdot.
