E&J Gallo buys Napa Valley brand Massican

The deal marks E&J Gallo's third California winery purchase in recent months.

E&J Gallo has struck another wine deal in Napa Valley with the acquisition of US winery Massican Wines.

Marking the second purchase in a week – after buying Rombauer Vineyards on Tuesday (29 August) – Gallo has snapped up the white wine producer for an undisclosed fee.

Launched in 2009, Massican has been unique in its “white wines only” production for the Napa Valley region – mainly Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay as well as other blends. In 2022, the winery produced 7,500 cases.

Founder Dan Petroski will continue to control winemaking, sourcing and brand vision, according to a Gallo statement.

“As a solopreneur, I have taken Massican as far as I could go alone,” said Petroski. “To achieve my vision of being one of the most important white wines made in California, I needed the support of the best professionals in this industry – I found that in Gallo. I can’t wait to see what we can do.”

Through the new partnership, Petroski hopes for Massican to expand its distribution and reach more consumers through Gallo’s holdings and grower relationships.

“Dan makes great wine,” said E&J Gallo brand manager John Irwin. “That’s where it has to start, but credibility matters, stewardship matters, and all wine drinkers, from the collector to the novice, want an authentic experience.

“These are not typical wines, especially for California; they’re low in alcohol, high in acid, salty, fresh. I think that’s because they’re an extension of Dan…there’s a humanity and vision to his wines.”

The deal marks Gallo’s third in recent months, after scooping the Hahn Family Wines portfolio for an undisclosed sum.
