Maguey Imports, the US distribution unit of Mexico's Maguey Spirits, has bought Bozal Mezcal and Pasote Tequila from 3 Badge Beverage Corporation.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
This acquisition is a “significant” development in the agave spirits industry, as these brands “return to Mexican ownership” under Maguey Spirits, Maguey Imports said.
Commenting on the deal, Maguey Spirits and Maguey Imports co-owner Alejandro Rossbach said: “A small producer has reclaimed the brands they’ve lovingly crafted, ensuring the legacy of these spirits remains deeply rooted in Mexico.
“Bozal and Pasote are now proudly Mexican-owned, fully integrated, and ready to reach consumers with the same passion and quality, but with a deeper connection to their origins.”
The move is said to align with Maguey Imports' goal to “preserve and elevate Mexico’s agave spirits heritage”.
With this acquisition, Maguey Imports aims to “strengthen” its presence in the US, Mexico, and beyond, focusing on “authenticity, quality, and sustainability”.
Just Drinks has asked the Maguey Spirits why it decided to purchase these brands specifically through its US distribution leg.
Bozal Mezcal is known for its traditional production methods and an array of wild and cultivated agave selections, presented in a ceramic packaging.
Pasote Tequila, produced in Jalisco's highlands in western Mexico, is recognised for its “pure, vibrant flavour and dedication” to conventional tequila-making techniques.
Just Drinks has asked the business to provide details on how it plans to grow Pasote and Bozal.
Brothers Alejandro and Christian Rossbach established Maguey Spirits in 2014.
The Mexican spirits distiller is focused on producing “exceptional” agave spirits from Oaxaca, Durango, and Jalisco, which includes the brands Burrito Fiestero and Señor Sotol.
The acquisition aligns with the growing global interest in agave-based spirits, which are projected to gain traction globally by 2025, driven by increased consumer interest in bartender recommendations and food-centric social occasions within the on-trade sector.
Speaking to Just Drinks earlier this month, Bacardi global advocacy director Jacob Briars said: “I think to no surprise you would see that 2025 will definitely be the year of agave spirits.”
