Dutch trader SAR Liquors has acquired a 50% stake in local gin business Sir Edmond.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Sir Edmond was set up in 2016 by Dominique Makatita, who is leaving the Dutch gin supplier to join Pernod Ricard.

Sir Edmond will be jointly owned by SAR Liquors and existing co-owner T-J van der Drift.

In a statement, Sir Edmond said the “strategic partnership” with SAR Liquors would “significantly expand the brand’s reach worldwide”.

The Bourbon vanilla-infused gin is sold in 30 countries. When measuring annual sales, its largest markets by annual sales are the Netherlands, Germany and Italy.

SAR Liquors, based in the Dutch city of Groningen, is an importer and exporter of spirits brands.

“The deal is expected to expand Sir Edmond gin’s presence in several markets, particularly the rest of Europe, the UK and South East Asia,” Sir Edmond brand manager Lotte Dekker told Just Drinks.

Dekker said Sir Edmond does not disclose its annual sales or profits.

In a statement posted on LinkedIn, Makatita confirmed his departure for Pernod Ricard and said: “After eight years of an incredible journey with Sir Edmond gin, it's time for both the brand and me to take the next step.

“With my departure from the company, we have found a fantastic partner and new shareholder in SAR Liquors, which will elevate Sir Edmond gin to the next level of international expansion.”
