The number of applications made in Europe for non-alcoholic drinks dropped by more than a third in the year to the end of June, data shows.

Between 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022, some 315 applications were lodged, GlobalData, Just Drinks’ parent, suggests.

In the corresponding period a year later, that number fell by 36% to 202, the research and intelligence group said.

The company classifies the non-alcoholic drinks market as soft drinks, tea, coffee and dairy drinks.

GlobalData’s Patent Analytics database contains global figures on the patents filed – and granted – by businesses across multiple sectors. Each patent is classified by theme, including those linked to areas such as the environment or health and wellness.

In the year to the end of June 2023, health and wellness accounted for 63 of the applications made.

The topic was also at the forefront of the applications a year earlier, making up almost a third of the requests.

D.E. Master Blenders 1753, the coffee business that’s now part of JDE Peet’s, topped the list of applications by company in the year to the end of June 2023 with 11.

A year earlier, the company was knocked into second spot by Nestlé.
