US wine-and-spirits business Terlato Wine Group has acquired a stake in Texas-based Blackland Distillery.

The financial terms of the deal, struck through the Chimney Rock wine owner’s Terlato Artisan Spirits division, were not disclosed.

Set up in 2019 by former attorney and chef Markus Kypreos, Blackland Distillery markets products including a rye whiskey, bourbons, a vodka and a gin.

Terlato Wine Group, which owns spirits brands including Riazul Tequila, wants to support Blackland Distillery’s production and distribution.

“Out first goal is to inject the capital needed to get national distribution of Blackland throughout the United States,” a Terlato Wine Group spokesperson told Just Drinks. “Terlato will use our existing internal sales-and-marketing teams, as well as our national third-tier distribution partners, to ensure state-by-state coverage.

“Additional investments will be made in securing the ingredients required to ensure we can fill the pipeline, which we anticipate to be substantial.”

In the US, Blackland Distillery’s products are on sale in ten states, including Texas, Kansas and Washington. The company also ships products to the UK, the Terlato Wine Group spokesperson added.

In a statement, Kypreos said Terlato Wine Group “is the best strategic partner for us”.

He added: “They are a respected leader in the wine and spirits industry and bring the distribution network and sales and marketing expertise needed to enhance our enterprise value, secure national distribution, and fuel our substantial growth into new markets.”

Terlato Wine Group snapped up Riazul in April, a deal that marked the company’s entry into Tequila.
