The Kraken Roast Coffee is the first flavoured rum from Cuervo’s Proximo Spirits unit. The brand extension is made using spiced Caribbean rum and arabica bean coffee.

The expression – which will be made available in both the on- and off-premise channels – has been designed with cocktails such as an Espresso ‘Rumtini’ in mind, according to the company. The 40% abv spirit is suitable for both vegetarians and vegans, Proximo added.

Earlier this month, Proximo partnered with marine conservation charity Padi Aware to introduce a limited-edition, glow-in-the-dark bottle offering of The Kraken. GBP1 from the sale of each bottle is to be donated to the charity’s efforts to combat ocean pollution.

Rum is yet to fully recover back to pre-pandemic levels in the UK. From a 2019 high of US$1.87bn, the category’s value plunged to US$1.34bn in 2020, bouncing back to US$1.56bn in 2021 (according to GlobalData). The spirit’s value is predicted to explode in the future, reaching nearly US$2.26bn by 2026. In the next five years, the rum category is expected to have a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.7% in value terms.
