UK-based Ojo De Dios has launched its debut namesake mezcal brand.

Ojo De Dios Mezcal Joven uses Mexican agave grown in the Oaxaca region that is twice-distilled in copper still pots. The 42%-abv mezcal is available now from selected London restaurants as well as via online alcohol e-tailers Master of Malt, Hip Flask and The Whiskey Exchange.

The company confirmed plans to expand the product’s reach to other international markets, including France, Spain and Singapore, in the coming months.

GlobalData figures show that consumption of Tequila and Mezcal in the UK remains well under 500,000 nine-litre cases annually, but has expanded steadily in recent years. From 2015 to 2019, the joint category grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.5% and, despite a one-year volumes slide of 13% forecast from 2020, the category is set to resume its upwards trajectory until 2024, albeit at a stunted CAGR of 5.2%.

Yesterday, Mexico-based spirits group Cuervo revealed its flagship Tequila brand jumped 9.2% in sales in the three months through to the end of March.
